Castrophany - Music Downloads

Rotation 25: Launched August 31, 2008.
» Sorry this one is so late! School's started, so I've been pretty busy. Also, I know I said that this rotation would have more rock, which it does, but I'm changing it up and doing songs that have been released in the last three months - with the exception of "American Boy" because it's one of the most kick-ass songs EVER.

» Please read the guidelines/ToS (above) before downloading! Thanks! =)

1. American Boy - Estelle featuring Kanye West

Album: Shine
Genre: R&B/Dance Pop/Reggae/Soul
Comments: This song doesn't exactly constitute as a new song (March 2008), but it's popularity EXPLODED over the summer and I haven't met one person who doesn't love this song, even if they're not usually lovers of this genre, so it definitely deserves a spot on this rotation. I don't know what it is about this song that makes it so amazing - it might be because it's so lighthearted with playfully innocent lyrics (by will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas), the catchy beat, Estelle's voice, or the fact that Kayne West really shines on this track, and I'm saying this as someone who doesn't usually listen to Kayne. I love the rap breakdown in the middle, and the video is really plain and simple, but really eyecatching at the same time. I really can't place my finger on it, but this song is something special. Estelle is tour and opening for Gym Class Heroes this fall, so make sure to catch them in concert!

2. Don't Trust Me - 3OH!3

Album: Want
Genre: Rapcore/Hip Hop/Electronica
Comments: 3OH!3 is a ridiculously catchy hip hop band from Colorado, and I had the pleasure of seeing them on Warped Tour. They completely blew me away with their amazing stage presense and they are HILARIOUS. They're just having fun, which you can tell if you look at some of their videos. The beat is crazy infectious and I always find myself singing along to this song and playing it over, and over, and over. Because really, how can you not love a song that has the line "shush girl, shut your lips, do the Hellen Keller and talk with your hips!" 3OH!3 always knows how to brighten my day!

3. You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - The Offspring

Album: Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace
Genre: Punk Rock/Skate Punk
Comments: It's been five years, but The Offspring has finally come out with a new album! And while it's no Smash, it's got a couple of pretty good songs, including this one which I definitely push as the best song on the album. It's a little darker than most of their popular songs, but it's still catchy and kicks ass. If you've ever liked anything by The Offspring, this song is worth a listen!

4. After The Last Midtown Show - The Academy Is...

Album: Fast Times at Barrington High
Genre: Indie Rock/Pop Punk
Comments: The Academy Is has come a really long way since the days of "Almost Here." The lyrics, especially for this song, are a lot more mature and I THINK that the title of the song (it's a reference to Gabe Saporta's pre-Cobra Starship band, which ROCKED) is a metaphor for his relationship, though I could be completely wrong. It's an interesting song, and has really pretty instrumentals anyways. ALSO, hear that beautiful underlying piano throughout the song? Hear that? Take it in, and then love the fact that its Andrew McMahon! That was just a little piece of useless trivia that I felt like sharing, but it totally made me love the song more.

5. D-I-E 4 Y-O-U - Family Force 5

Album: Dance or Die
Genre: Christian Crossover Crunk Rock
Comments: Fun and upbeat with nice loud bass and random lyrics that don't really make sense. Family Force 5 knows how to party!

6. How Do You Sleep? - Jesse McCartney

Album: Departure
Genre: R&B/Hip Hop
Comments: I'm sorry, I'm sorry, but this song is ridiculously catchy! It still blows my mind how much his music has changed from the early Dream Street days. This song is definitely more pop than hip hop, but it's got a cool bells(?) part going in the background of the chorus and it's kind of cute =) But if you're not into R&B at all, you probably won't like this hahaha.

7. Machine In The Ghost - The Faint

Album: Fasciinatiion
Genre: Indie Rock/Dance Punk/Synthpop
Comments: The Faint write some really really strange lyrics, but it always works really well for them. This song is more downtempo from last rotation's "The Geeks Were Right" but it's still got the amazing synth effects that's present in all their stuff. This song is pretty cool, in a pretty strange way =)

8. Love In This Club - Usher

Album: Here I Stand
Genre: R&B
Comments: I don't know what it is about this song either, it just grabs your attention and holds it. It's probably the title and the songs that are about having the urge to "make love in this club" and it's not very fast at all, but it's catchy and has some really cool synth in the background. I'm really lovin' Young Jeezy's verse because it really contrasts with the rest of the song.

9. Ricochet! - Shiny Toy Guns

Album: Season of Poison
Genre: Indie Rock/Electronica/Synthpop
Comments: This is the first single off the new album scheduled to be released in early November. What's your opinion of the new female singer? I feel like I liked the old one better, but I don't want to make an opinion before I hear the album. The instrumentals are awesome, as usual and it's worth a listen if you're into Shiny Toy Guns or any electronica at all!

10. Viva la Vida (acoustic) - Boyce Avenue

Album: Acoustic Sessions: Vol. 3
Genre: Acoustic
Comments: This is an acoustic cover of Coldplay's "Viva la Vida," and I actually think it's really good. My friend burned me an acoustic playlist when I left for college last month because I needed to listen to "less-angry music." The entire playlist was pretty good, but I couldn't really listen to it straight because it was too calm, but this one really stood out to me a lot. The funny thing is, I'd never heard the original version of this song until about a week after I heard this acoustic version, but I still like this one better because I think the lyrics just go a lot better with acoustic instrumentals.
